About Us

America Achieves helps communities and states leverage policy, practice and leadership to build high quality educational systems and prepare each young person for success in careers, college, and citizenship.

Educators and communities have demonstrated that all young people are capable of achieving at much higher levels -- but these pockets of excellence are not enough. That is why America Achieves supports leaders and communities with real potential for large-scale success. This support includes:

  • offering fellowships and networks that tap and build on the creativity and expertise of some of America's most successful and promising educators
  • disseminating tools that communicate and generate support for the high expectations all students deserve as well as the support they need to get and stay on track for success
  • developing recommendations and bipartisan support for investing public funds in evidence-based solutions that can be taken to large scale

Throughout our work, we uncover, examine, and promote approaches and practices that can drive success across entire educational systems, communities, and states. We aim to address unmet needs, avoid duplication of efforts, and, wherever possible, work with partners in order to fully leverage scarce resources for maximum impact for children and young people.

3. Common Core State Standards

What are the Common Core State Standards?

The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.

Read more at http://www.corestandards.org/about-the-standards

What are the Key Shifts?

The shifts are the major changes in instruction that happen with implementation of the Common Core State Standards. Read more about the key shifts or watch the ELA/Literacy shifts and the Math shifts videos accessible from the home page.

For ELA/Literacy the key shifts are:

  • Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction and informational texts
  • Reading and writing grounded in evidence from text
  • Regular practice with complex text and its academic vocabulary

For Mathematics they are:

  • Focus strongly where the Standards focus
  • Coherence: think across grades, and link to major topics within grades
  • Rigor. In major topics pursue with equal intensity: conceptual understanding; procedural skill and fluency; and application
Are all of these shifts shown on this website?

Not every shift can be shown in a classroom teaching video as some of these reflect the thought and decisions made before the teacher arrives in the classroom. On this website you will find video of teachers demonstrating and talking about:

In ELA/Literacy:

  • Reading and writing grounded in evidence from text
  • Text selection of complex text
  • Academic vocabulary

In Mathematics:

  • Focus
  • From the Rigor shift: Conceptual understanding and Application

Where can I get a copy of the Standards documents?

ELA/Literacy:
http://www.corestandards.org/assets/CCSSI_ELA%20Standards.pdf

Math:
http://www.corestandards.org/assets/CCSSI_Math%20Standards.pdf

These documents, and particular standards, are referenced by page number in the lesson plans on this site.

This is intended to take advantage of the safe harbor offered under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which, among other things, shields site owners from liability for copyright infringement resulting from user-generated content. You don't have to have a separate policy, but it would be shorter to link it here then to put in the body of the terms – what you need to do to qualify for the safe harbor is (1) designate an agent to receive notices of copyright infringement, notify the US Copyright Office and pay the specified fee; (2) identify the agent on the site and provide contact information; and (3) adopt a policy to terminate subscriber accounts of repeat infringers.

EQuIP

EQuIP (Educators Evaluating the Quality of Instructional Products) is designed to identify high-quality materials aligned to the Common Core State Standards.

The objectives are two-fold:

  • Increase the supply of high quality lessons and units aligned to the CSSS that are available to elementary, middle, and high school teachers; and
  • Build the capacity of educators to evaluate and improve the quality of instructional materials for use in their classrooms and schools.

The EQuIP rubrics are designed to evaluate:

  • Lessons that include instructional activities and assessments aligned to the CCSS that may extend over a few class periods or days
  • Units that include integrated and focused lessons aligned to the CCSS that extend over a longer period of time
  • The rubrics do not require a specific template for lesson or unit design
